If you're reading this, it means you are interested in avoiding a common mistake. That mistake is submitting a created character incorrectly, whether through misplaced information, or in other such way that makes approving it impossible. So, here are some things you'll need to know while submitting a character. This thread is meant to be a sister guide to the other threads in the other forums, it will not cover what those guides have already went over. If you've already read those, then let's begin the current lesson:

The Basics

So you're interested in RPing. Good for you. Thing is, you need to make a character first. You knew that already, but it isn't enough to just write up anything that pops into your head and be done with it. If you want your character to be approved, you'll need to put as much effort and detail into it as possible. Below are some tips to keep in mind while creating a character:

  • Your character should be faithful to the universe he belongs to. This means that your character follows the rules established by the canon. Specifically, it means that if it turns out that your character couldn't possibly exist in the canon, it isn't acceptable. An example for the Naruto universe would be that a character that copies Kekkei Genkai could not be an acceptable character, because canon has defined a Kekkei Genkai as a technique that runs in ones bloodline, and cannot be simply copied by normal means. This rule also affects techniques that have been defined by the canon as being incredibly hard to learn, and take a massive amount of time as well as a teacher in order to master it. Just because this is a fanon does not give you the right to break canon. Fanon is meant to expand on canon works, not destroy them.

  • All details are important, no matter how seemingly meaningless. You'll need to put in all the bare requirements for your character to meet standards, but you'll have a better time if you go the extra mile and tell us more about your character. Does your character have any bad habits, or verbal tics? Any fears, or special interests? Does your character fight well in all situations, or is there a certain situation where your character might struggle in? Providing these details will flesh your character out and make your character seem more human, and more interesting as a result. Don't be afraid to draw outside the lines. We won't get mad at you for it.

  • I shouldn't have to say this, but originality is both expected and demanded. Instead of copy and pasting a list of techniques, make some of your own. As long as you put work into your character and don't just put together a Frankenstein monster of all your favorite anime characters, you'll feel better for it. I'm serious about the Frankenstein thing. I've seen it happen many times and I'm sick of it. If I see a character like that, I'm going to chase it into a windmill and kill it with fire, and then I'll slap you with the torch. Don't do it.

Still with me? Good. Your reward is the template you'll be using to submit your characters. This template works for both Naruto and Bleach characters. Make sure you fill the required spaces, and keep in mind that you are free to add anything about your character that is not already specified on the template. Just don't screw with it more than you need to.

Official Template

Anime: (Put whether you character will be a Naruto character or Bleach character)

Name: (The name of your character will go here. Simple.)

Age: (How old your character is. Keep in mind that an older character will more often than not be stronger than a younger character)

Gender: (I really hope that I don't need to explain this one)

Height and Weight: (This is really an optional field, though it would be nice if you gave us a good idea of how large or small your character is, yes?)

Picture and/or Description: (You are not required to give a picture, you are however required to give a description of what your character looks like and what your character wears. In any event, both of them go here.)

Background: (Give us a good idea of your character's history. You won't be penalized for overly tragic backstories, but keep in mind that it isn't against the rules for your character to have a decent childhood...)

Personality: (Give us an idea of how your character acts. If you are seen RPing your character in a way that doesn't fit with this, that just wouldn't be any good at all, would it?)

Overall Fighting Ability: (Here's where you explain in detail how your character fights, and how well he fights. List his strengths and weaknesses in combat. Any weapons your character uses will also be listed here.)

Techniques: (Here's where you list any techniques your character knows. If it's an original technique, you'll be expected to give at least a summary of what the move does, or if it already exists on the wiki, link to it. Keep in mind that all original techniques can affect your character. If a broken or otherwise unacceptable technique is found on your character, it will not be approved until the technique in question is fixed.)

Status: (Leave this space blank. A character that has been approved will have "approved" in this space).

As mentioned, you are free to add any qualities to your character to the template as you see fit. Avoid being lazy, unoriginal, or otherwise make a mistake with creating and submitting your character, and you'll do just fine.
